my mind automatically translates "universal healthcare" to "subsidized obesity"

I dunno. Are there counties with universal healthcare that have higher obesity rates than the United States?

wrong question. United states is one of the fattest countries (obv.) What will universal healthcare overwhelmingly pay for?

Fair enough. The side of ‘subsidies’ that implies you get more of the thing being subsidized didn’t ring true. I could be wrong. Do people live less healthily if given access to ‘free’ healthcare? What happens at 65 when eligibility for Medicare kicks in? Are there studies?

I don't think you can use people over 65 as a good reference group for medical interventions in general population. But you would get more obesity also, because certain groups of people who have less access to healthcare now are more prone to obesity

I don’t follow that second point. If more obese groups have less access, why would we think giving them access would increase obesity? Maybe there are people counting calories and going to the gym because they are concerned about medical bills, but that’s far from obvious.

because giving them more healthcare will help them live longer and potentially help them to breed more. Most people who are fat, are fat because they lack self-discipline. Doctors can't cure that, but it can be passed down to children.

The idea that people who can't afford healthcare would somehow have the self-discipline needed to eat better to cut down on medical bills is laughable

The reality is that we already have free healthcare for obese <human populations likely to be obese> (but not whites). If you're on dialysis at 30 in America USG is already picking up the bill.

For those most likely to be obese, yes. For everyone else (myself included) not so much.

>For everyone else (myself included) not so much. Exactly. This more falls under why Yang's UBI was such a joke. If the system knows to whom it wants to give free money and it already gives it to them - no one is going to trick the system into giving money to you.

It's like that meme with the white zoomer trying to get blacks to vote for Bernie. "That shit's already free."
