Maybe we should invest at least 1% of our military R&D budget into developing less lethal but still fast, effective, & accurate weapons for cops. Guns, tasers, & batons are legacy tech that seem unlikely to be the best possible solution to handling a lot of these situations.

Why? What social value is there in keeping multiple time felons alive when they are so out of control that they'll attack cops armed with deadly weapons?

Presumably to remove a potent political irritant. Of course this won’t work, or not for long. Might be worth trying though. Set phasers on stun!

You're not thinking it through. Infinite catch and release of felons where if the felon is harmed when being caught one side flips out and burns cities means you either give up on stopping felons from feloning or the other side flips out regularly. Hanging felons, otoh...

Judicial executions presume a far more functional baseline than the ad-hoc on-the-spot solutions forced on us now. If we had the stones for Tudor jurisprudence we would not have these problems. ps: Do you know what a phaser is? Was that a serious suggestion?

I get that it was a joking suggestion but the idea is that even with a perfect stunning weapon like a phaser all you're doing if you catch and release is setting up a situation where you keep rolling dice until it comes up snake eyes.
