Disagree with the second part about economics -> business. Ex.; AMZ tried out several author payment schemes for selling ebooks and methods for conglomerating reviews into scores.

Each time it initially started out with a gamable method knowing that the people incentivized to break the model would do so and that efforts to make the model ungabable would fail. What they did instead was iterate rapidly after market actors pointed out the flaws.

They were using customer money as bounties. Very much applied econ thinking to solve a novel business problem.

"Incentives work" is what I mean by basics that are right (qualitatively) but if econ was like physics, you would use 1 experiment to measure a parameter and then solve an entire class of problems. Compare w/ measuring G once and solving _all_ gravity problems for any masses.

Basics like "incentives work," "specialization is good," and such are like alchemy, except that alchemists knew the difference between lore and theory. Using the math of [cardinal] utility from revealed preference for anything but a grad econ test is a guaranteed fail 1/2

because we know from experimentation that context manipulates [real-life observed] preferences in a way that violates SARP, which is essential for revealed preference to yield a utility. THAT is what having a theory that doesn't work means. 2/2

Humans are more complex than particles because humans have brains that actively work against your systematizing of them. "I found the one perfect way to manipulate people" becomes stale and hokey to people who have seen the trick before.

Right. That's why market researchers don't pretend they have general theories; they very clearly (and cleverly) state that their research is valid for the market and strategic conditions at the time of study. Business decision-makers then use a mix of technique & judgment.

Sure but "let your sellers find the ways to manipulate your matching system and fix it afterward" really is applying general econ logic. Same concept as game designers letting the player base find the broken strategies. "People break systems, harness that."

"Things fall down when you release them" is general physics logic. I agree that economics at that level "works" inasmuch as that's "working." x = 1/2 g t^2 is Physics you can build engineering on. There's no equivalent in econ, where one parameter solves a class of problems.
