Yes. Brown cites research purporting to show that, when controlling for class markers (crime obvs being a big one!), white respondents still undervalued houses when Black ppl were present in neighborhoods.

You wld then argue: “white ppl are using race as a proxy for criminality” I wld then respond: “yeah, & that’s racist” & then u go “no it’s rational” & then I respond “nooooooo...

YungSpengler @YungSpenglerTHREAD Correlating murder rate in 20 US cities using: % Black pop vs. "Socio-economic" factors % Black is by far most predictive variable. R-squared of 0.90 = 90% of variation btwn cities is explained *solely* by diff in Black pop. Claim: correlation of murder rate w % Black pop’n is not evidence of a hereditary cause. Evidence: the correlation is not stable *over time*. The 90s saw a marked drop in murder rate without a correlating change in % Black population. ...

Whether the massively higher average murder rate seen among African-Americans than other Americans is 100% due to nurture, 100% due to nature, or some combination of the two is interesting but not that relevant. What is relevant is that it has proven intractable so far.

We can rule out 100% “nature”; 100% “nurture” seems likely & “99% nurture” is a near certainly given what we know abt genetics, the species-level fixedness of our neuro-cognitive hardware, it’s sensitivity to environmental conditions, & the extreme plasticity of our behavior.

If “intractable” means absolute rates, that’s not warranted. Among all citizens, crime soared in the 20s, dipped from interwar through postwar industrialization, soared 60s-90s, and has fallen since then. This does not indicate “we know the causes and treatment”...

...but it surely doesn’t indicate “intractable”. I assume that what is intractable trans-culturally is the link between relative poverty-&-low-status & violence. Violence is culturally & generationally reproduced by imprinting, stress & trauma, and acute status-threats.

Shooting people is now considered an authentic part of black culture, according to 10,000 rap songs. The only way to persuade blacks to stop shooting each other so much is the one way we'd never ever do: make blacks feel ashamed of themselves for their absurd murder rate.
