Why the name thing is so triggering to me and so many other Asians. A thread. I spent my entire adult life in the U.S. by my "nickname" Michelle because I hated dealing with the burden of correcting people each time they got my name wrong.

I hated the shame I felt every new school year when the teacher would butcher my Korean name on the roster. If you went to a school with a lot of Asian kids, you know the drill - Teacher: "[mispronounced Asian name]" Asian Student: "uh.. I go by Peter" [Other kids chuckling]

We speak English in America. I work w many SKoreans and they have loads of trouble w the foreign names of people they work w If a name's not BUILT for one's mother tongue, how can someone reasonably take offense to folks not being able to say it "right"?

If your name has an "L" in it and Koreans say it as an "R" sound that's done purely out of racial hatred.
