Oh yeah, this caused a shit storm in the HEMA community because it was foul play by the guy who grappled. Both guys ended up suffering some serious injuries.

Was it “foul play” as in a foul or were the sword boys just sad because their guy got Greco’d? I don’t know the rules.

Foul play, depending on the tournament rules, but tournaments that allow grappling only allow the start of a grapple, as in you start grappling but you don't throw. Refs should've also called hold as soon as it happened, but the fencers themselves should've also stopped too.

Copy. So if it were illegal, then this would be illegal, but from the reaction of the two officials and the comments of the oldest poster of this video I could find, it seems as if this was a legal maneuver. Thank you!

In straight up grappling contests (bjj at least) this is illegal - the point of training and competing is to train techniques that work against full power resisting opponents without injury. Declare the guy a winner when he gets a full takedown without him having to break ribs.

In what BJJ ruleset would this be an illegal slam? This isn’t excessive force with intent to injure, he doesn’t excessively elevate nor jump into it, and it’s a continuous motion of a legitimate technique. It’s at least ADCC and IBJJF legal. Other than that, I’m with you!

Part of it is the danger of the sword landing badly and someone falling on it. It's why when training longsword grappling techniques we have to be mindful of where our sword is and which way the crossguard is facing.

Ok, that's a legit reason for "no grappling" but as a grappler it still bothers me.
