Something close to the opposite is true. Class consciousness failed all on its own in the 20th century. Which sent the type of people who become commies shopping for a new idea. They tried two: environmentalism, and race/gender politics. The latter is what caught on.
Class consciousness *hadn't* failed when progressivism abandoned its belief in genetics/eugenics by the 1930s though, in fact it was arguably at its height So the question still isn't answered
If you asked anyone *in favor of* class consciousness how they thought it was going around, say, 1936, they’d have said worse than their worst fears. It was clear by then the workers of the world were never going to unite.
Really? Seems to me they were all in love with the Soviets at that point. Kennan's position wasn't even popular over a decade later, there's a reason he was an anon poster
Even the Spanish Civil War, oft romanticized as a high water mark, proves the case. A bunch of rich kid bohemians with book deals in their future going off to larp revolution in a squid eating backwater was so pale an imitation of Marx’s vision as to mock it.
Well yeah. True class consciousness is much closer to fascism, which is why those elites had to alter their ideology in the first place, and train legions of bohemian strivers to fight against it. That's exactly how the modern left got coopted into this process
How it looks to me: Left tries for prole revolution, fails Tries instead with peasants, fails Tries again with excess elites & racial lumpenproles, going good so far Why would Randolph & Mortimer conspire for 3 to stop 1, when 1 hasn’t been a threat in 80 years?
The strategy didn't really change from 1 to 3 - it was always excess elites / the priestly class - they switched who they use as their muscle / vote banks because they could no longer sell their previous cover on the promise of the revolution.
True, elites always ran the show. As with every movement. But they weren’t excess yet when this started. We didn’t have the excess elite problem until *after* everyone started going to college & women entered the workforce en masse.
