I think mainly I just want to understand what it was that seemingly convinced all Smart People and 90% of normies that Masks Really Work, a Silver Bullet. I just see no logical way it can have been the actual data - like, the observed trajectory of the epidemic. So what, then?

Masks allow you to do things like go to the dentist, have a haircut, take a subway ride to visit a museum etc. So if infections occur at other places / situations where masks are not used or ineffective (gym, mosh pit, brothel, pub etc.) then you won't notice the effect because..

There’s something to that. I’ve wondered if it’s like pushing on a balloon. You prevent transmission in situations XYZ but that just means they (instead) pop up in situations ABC. Net-net no effect. But doesn’t even that mean we don’t need to mandate them in, like, gyms?

Seems like youre doing a lot of work to find reasons why they wouldn't be useful, when basic logic shows how it could be effective to reduce spread. Virologist who are dealing with viruses use masks ontop of full body suits.

What you fail to understand is that "reducing the spread" is pointless if the Rt is over 1 - Rt over 1 means it's going to spread until herd immunity; lowering Rt from some number over 1 to some other number over 1 does nearly nothing.
