Except Deadwood, which is #1 Rome top 3-5 for sure, and has held up to multiple viewings The Wire held up poorly to time, The Sopranos was great in its context Mad Men season 1 standalone is a masterpiece

Side note: ancient battle scenes are paradoxically often the worst scenes in a movie/show - they're so poorly done, rely on the same tropes like a surprise unceremonious death, a rival of questionable loyalty saving the king at last instant etc Rome one of few realistic battles

Rome avoided showing battles. You get a scene in the premier and a few scenes set in battles later but no attempt is made to really convey a battle - it's about the characters.

Yeah I meant specifically the one battle in ep 1 before Vercingetorix surrenders, was one of the only realistic ancient battle scenes you'll see on tv/film Given that it's a shame Rome didn't have GoT type budget

But that’s also a good thing bc it limited focus on character development/ story - my latest rewatch I forgot how funny the show was - so many historical winks / jokes like Titus and Lucius finding Pompey then letting him go, or the treasury after senate flees Rome etc

It is a great meta joke with them finding Pompey and letting him go. "It was just right to let him go [because he dies in Egypt]" and Caesar for not executing them for it "they have powerful gods watching over them [the writers who need them for their perspective]"
