We need to replace the term "virtue signalling" with something clearer. The thoughtful @ciphergoth has suggested "piety contest" - an improvement.
I'll suggest we build on the original term. Call out "empty virtue signalling."https://twitter.com/bernybelvedere/status/1362856519956647936 …
Have to get to the object level for this. You can in theory virtue signal for actual virtues - conspicuously bear costs simply to demonstrate commitment to actual virtues but for the most part actual virtues aren't easy to signal so the "virtues" that get signaled are beliefs.

You could argue that the memetic evolutionary pressure was to converge on an set of venerated virtues specifically because they're easy to signal in terms of bearing costs but hard to signal without a good level of verbal intelligence.

What do you think of as "actual" virtues? Getting a PhD is a signal of both intelligence and hard work for example. Being nice to waiters is some signal of both kindness and being willing to go along with social niceties, and so forth.

In general I'd expect good signals to be cheaper when they're honest and more expensive when they're lies, almost by definition.
