Yes, I agree this is likely the explanation, but I still think it's simply not true that this piece is what people expected it to be. I think they expected it to be much worse, but now that it's out, they have talked themselves into believing it was as bad as they expected it to

I expected that after all last year's pushback against the NYT in support of Scott Alexander from highly respectable people that they would permanently spike the story, but they went ahead and published this obviously pissy, distorted, and small-minded piece anyway.

Yeah, I'm not sure that's the right take. I think it was originally a hit piece, although no one expected it to be, and people were regretful that the reporter wouldn't agree to keep him anonymous. I think the delay was because of the negative perception of the doxxing alone.

So despite most people not thinking it was a hit piece, it *was* a hit piece, and just held back until they could use his name without the negative pushback. But it wasn't only a hit piece on Scott, but a warning shot to those prominent fans (like, say, NYT oped writer Douthat).

I imagine it's also intended to help persuade World's Second Richest Man Elon Musk that he better donate, say, $10 billion to Wokeness or they will be coming for Musk too eventually.

Again, not totally convinced. Scott's too small potatoes for that.

But Scott Alexander is well-defended small potatoes, so the NYT taking him on sends a message to the Big Potatoes (like Thiel and Musk) that they had better kowtow to Woke Dogmas if they know what is good for them.

Thiel and Musk are utterly immune to woke dogmas. They are after Douthat, McArdle, Trende and others.

Andreessen & Horowitz, two other targets of the article, recently announced they'd be investing in opinion journalism. The message to Silicon Valley zillionaires is too keep your head down and be a supportive lapdog to Establishment Media, like Jeff Bezos and Carlos Slim are.

Yeah, totally disagree with this take. Zillionaires don't have to give a shit what NYTimes reporters say, and if he were after them he'd have had to be much more direct.
