If Scott's playing to the second sort of audience, the McInnes thing was a serious slip up; people noticed it, and compared notes, and thought about what it says about his credibility. If he's playing to the first sort, we'll find that out quickly.

Sometimes mistakes happen when you don't know what you don't know. Scott is ensconced in such a leftist bubble that he might have thought that statement was just what a reasonable person would say.

What I'm hoping. Six years ago, Scott wrote an article called "I Can Tolerate Anything Except The Outgroup" that let me crawl out of my ideological bubble. Hard to put into words how much I owe him for that. (...)

That doesn't mean auto-agreeing with anything he says, or failing to notice when he gets things wrong, or failing to look for patterns in the things. But it does buy him an awful lot of screwups before I'd stop being fond of him.

Hmm, about six years ago he banned me from his comments section for making right wing arguments that he couldn't dispute and declared it the start of a "reign of terror" where he'd ban right wing commenters for any or no reason.

I remember the reign if terror. I didn't approve. I think he did have criteria for banning people, although they were very generous. I remember a debacle about a user called EchoChaos, who Scott kind of wanted to ban but who actually hadn't broken the rules.

And a bunch of people pointed out that EC hadn't broken the rules, and Scott unbanned him. Not good to have banned him in the first place, and idk if he always did even that well. Also not asserting the rules themselves were good- although I liked the resultant community a lot.

But I think it does indicate some desire to act on principle, on his part. And he ultimately did- after he didn't, but eventually. And I'm skeptical we're actually going to do better than that. (This is why I keep going back to the "humans make mistakes" well.)

(Curious what you got banned for, but I guess it was under a different name. I sometimes disagreed with those, but not always. Also, it was his blog. His decisions managing it certainly speak to his character, but I'm not sure how strong a duty of care I actually think he had.)

(Probably pretty minimal, actually, if I'm being honest. That said, rejecting honest argumentation is a huge red flag.I confess I was privately hoping it was a tone thing. Although that standard wasn't applied symmetrically, either.)

The only ban on the page of ban records where the reason is listed as "no reason". Very easy to find.
