It's a simple calculus of "Trump made it ok to just say, yeah, we don't give a shit about people not like us" and BLM responded in mind. (Again, it could be argued that Trump got elected because of the same dynamic between rural/urban)...

But Trump opened the pandora's box of not even pretending or paying lip service to civility. Whole different ball game.

Trump opened a Pandora's box? What even is "BLM"? Why and how does it exist? Where does it collect funds? Who are its leaders? When you answer these questions it's obvious that they're a paramilitary arm of the state with laundered state funding There's no organic BLM response

Even if that were true, how does it change the argument? Trump opened the door and either citizens or other politicians also stepped through it.

This could be settled with a bet about whether we'll see more or less BLM rioting in the next four years, unless the argument is that Trump destroyed the norms so permanently that even full control of everything by respectable democrats can't fix it.

The argument was that Trump opened the overton window, and I don't think it will be so easily closed.

There are other things we could do looking backwards and saying "What would you expect from either model" but I don't think it's worthwhile to do here on twitter, although probably worthwhile to in general understand the world.

To be clear, I don't view this as a republican bad/democrat good idea. I view this as "Trumps path to gaining and weilding power was particularly bad for the Overton window."

"bad for the Overton window" isn't something that's bad when it is just the (part of) the tyranny arm of anarcho-tyranny. On top of which saying that the Overton window - as in the things you're allowed to say without being fired and deplatformed - is wider is insane.

Hmm, leadership that are actual Marxists who have committed bombings and got presidential pardons, you say? Pointing out that Soros funds a lot of it is a slightly misleading shorthand though - Soros is a cutout for USG funds. Other USG funds go to BLM without going through him.
