Maybe the causality runs the other way and the narrative control got sloppy enough that it was cracked by a bunch of guys who wanted to play games. Maybe the tools for seeing through it grew stronger and gamers didn't have more delicate fnord filters b/c no one cared about games

When the story is in a mind-killed area people become unable to follow basic logic or make inferences and connections. That control is subtle and has to be implanted but it's totally missing in other areas. Once someone sees the trick though, it can't be unseen.
