Cowardice isn't the primary factor - it's a result. The primary factor is that their memeplex - techno-libertarianism had no ideas in it that facilitated cooperation against those who didn't share those ideas.

The first requirement for any memeplex is that it has a way to keep control of orgs dedicated to spread it which means it has to facilitate blind cooperation - "Always side with the in-group over the out-group" and tech-lib explicitly disavowed that rule.

To be brave you need to have the idea in your head that you and your friends are worth fighting for and their entire ideology was based on the idea that no one would or should fight for his friends. It's an idea nearly guaranteed to produce cowards.
