They don't fear losing control of the narrative exactly - they fear having been seen as having done something to help the other side or not having done something to stop them.

Yeah This is kind of a chicken or the egg problem do they fear trump supporters for not being on board with the narrative, or do they fear being ostracized by their peers for not having contributed to stop the enemy? Isn't 2nd implicit is the 1st?
