Eh if she had been able to get it in 5 minutes this would have been great. By 6 he should have called it off, not doubled down. At 15, he's thinking it's too late to back out, it teaches the wrong lesson, must continue. He should have let her eat ofc but left the can as challenge

If there's no urgency (like hunger in this case) it's a game to figure it out (if he's the type that enjoys that sort of thing) and you only get one chance to figure out how a can opener works before you know. Just for teaching the "I do, we do, you do" works best though.
