If what happened to Detroit didn't sully the reputation of democracy I doubt an exodus from San Francisco will. Probably because the places they've moving to are about as democratic as the places they're fleeing and don't have those issues.

It did sully the reputation but at the time the only alternative people could imagine was the Soviet bloc - now it's become very obvious that economic freedom and property rights aren't tied to democracy and in fact are all much less secure in democratic regimes.
