>the laws protect all citizens Delusional. The law cleans up after men who protect themselves and *maybe* goes after repeat offenders against people. That's functional - no wonder the 21st century is such a mess if people think the law should solve every problem with outlaws.

Is the world really that inherently lawless? A lot of middle-class people don't protect themselves but still have property &c. (the millions of liberals who don't own guns)—isn't that that the Law (state monopoly on violence) working as advertised?
