Useless but fun speculation of the day: If you were suddenly transported back to the 12th century, what useful modern inventions could you re-create, using only then-current technology, or technologies you made from then-current technology?

Good point. Trade is also an option though. Plus I think even the Romans had some slaves from south of the Sahara. I think by the 12th century the disease problem could have been overcome. I mean coffee started getting popular in the 15th century, not that much later tech wise.

There are almost no navigable rivers south of the Sahara, one of Africa's biggest geographic limitations. They're either all too waterfall and rock strewn or impassable from the sea.

Again, one wouldn’t have to conquer Africa to trade for coffee beans. As it happened, the Arabs were drinking coffee in the 15th cen and the euros had by the 16th. It certainly would have been possible in the 12th century.
