Masks may or may not reduce transmission at a statistically significant rate, but what will significantly decrease trust in experts is pretending that the science is absolutely unified in asserting that masks are effective tools in the fight against the pandemic.
The initial official reaction was as wrong as possible - "xenophobia is worse than any disease" and "no tests except CDC's non-working ones". Close off travel from China, test and quarantine travelers and you go from 10 to 0. Nothing the "experts" have proposed since can work

True, I don't mean the official policy, but the general sense that the virus was unstoppable, but yeah you're right that quickly gave way to bad decisions.
