Although our "innovators" being soulless goons certainly has a lot to do with it, an even bigger factor is that dopamine hacks are about all that people are allowed to make without the system putting formidable barriers in their way.

The curve that shows the per capita energy usage of Western civ demonstrates this. Need big amounts of energy to make big, interesting things but you can hack dopamine with tiny energy. Big energy is illegal so human energy goes to where it can be used.

There's an upward curve from the middle ages to around 1970 or so of increasing energy usage per capita. Mechanical energy supplanting animal power, then generation of more and more mechanical energy, etc. right up until when nuclear power was next and it just stops and flattens

Who knows what men could have accomplished in a world where they had access to large amounts of energy for doing physical work. Orbital mega-construction? Who knows. Instead the most capable minds have been dedicated to optimizing algorithms and making finance more efficient
