Although our "innovators" being soulless goons certainly has a lot to do with it, an even bigger factor is that dopamine hacks are about all that people are allowed to make without the system putting formidable barriers in their way.

The curve that shows the per capita energy usage of Western civ demonstrates this. Need big amounts of energy to make big, interesting things but you can hack dopamine with tiny energy. Big energy is illegal so human energy goes to where it can be used.

Software died when it became obvious that you could evade progressive rules on doing productive things if you did them on a computer network so progressives turned all their energy to infiltrating software companies Took less effort then infiltrating and destroying manufacturing
