I suppose my point, if imperfectly articulated, was that it is important to celebrate great men and masculinity—but the men I admire, men like Mandela, John Hume, King, Manzoni, lived with an extraordinary openness of spirit and kindness toward other people.

I literally said he was a great man “despite his flaws.” What’s the alternative? Condemning all sides unequivocally, which is tantamount to supporting apartheid? Remember what he was up against.
