In nutshell. Fraternal birth order effect: Older brothers increase odds of homosexuality in later-born males. Maternal immune hypothesis: Male fetuses immunize the mother to Y-linked antigen. Anti-male antibody diverts brain development in subsequent fetus from male-typical path.pic.twitter.com/1uFdzVMm32

That doesn't solve the evolutionary problem though. Doesn't matter if there's a single gene or if there's a complex interaction involving only the mother and son's body - there's immense selective pressure against (effectively) sterilizing your son.

I thought the advantage seems to be in having maternal uncles that don't have kids?

No. Lots of reasons why not - there's no widespread cultural knowledge of this and the effect size would have to be immense (hence, easily noticed everywhere) to offset having a near sterile male.

There's also the "gay uncle" theory, that it may be advantageous for the species to have a certain percentage of people who aren't likely to reproduce and are thus available to provide extra care for family members.

Evolution isn't perfect—the selective pressure may not have been strong enough to fix this design flaw. Someone who knows more than me should be able to do the calculation to check! (There are probably other examples of fitness risks that increase with number of pregnancies?)

Can you explain why a huge portion of rams appear asexual, and 6-8% are homosexual? Huge fitness costs. It’s been suggested it’s down to Domestication.

Domestication obviously is a confounding factor - especially in removing pressure on deleterious effects on males because most males get culled anyway. Some domestic turkeys literally can't mate without human conducted artificial insemination.

what proves that sterilizing *males* is an evolutionary disadvantage ? in the other hand for instance if they are closer to each other the group/tribe can be stronger when hunting or fighting (plato's hypothesis in the banquet)
