Wikipedia is useful for lots of things but mainly it's a great refutation of the concept of a "marketplace of ideas" - the tech-libertarian conception of wiki had people competing individually to produce good articles and good edits would drive out bad. 1/2
Not nationally but you did have institutions that did exactly that but the founders were blind to them the way fish are blind to water. "No one faction could possible capture all the individual state churches and mutate their thought setting powers to get around our safeguards"
