Wikipedia is useful for lots of things but mainly it's a great refutation of the concept of a "marketplace of ideas" - the tech-libertarian conception of wiki had people competing individually to produce good articles and good edits would drive out bad. 1/2

Sure, but reputation in whose eyes? Nearly a century after Walter Duranty the NYT is still considered reliable (and it is in a lot of ways - they don't tell direct lies preferring to use other methods of deceit)

Yes. A very useful tool for installing rule one in lots of people - make it look scary to drift away from using "credible, consensus" sources by supporting insane positions and having those positions stick around forever.
