He inspired admiration before he had victories to back it up. I brought that up because you were saying that the visceral impression of the athlete as more masculine was unmatched by anything on the other side. There are visceral reactions to both types of masculinity.

I'd argue that it takes more bravery to stay in line and fight in a disciplined fashion rather than relieving the tension by acting impulsively - even if the impulsive action is directed at the enemy rather than fleeing.
