For all the US's multicultural and multiethnic problems, is there an example in modern history of a state (with diversity matching or greater than ours) that handled those challenges better than we do? Not Russia, Austria-Hungary, China, Yugoslavia, South Africa...

Yes. Singapore - by taking an approach that's so far from what someone like Caplan wants or something that the left will accept. The Gulf States do better as well.
