Smarter / more ambitious isn't so simple that the same men will come out on top in all systems. Bad systems will actually select in favor of bad characteristics because those men will owe more to the system.

I agree that's a problem. But let's look at Japan. It appears stoic commitment to work is much bigger there than in the US. Would you apply the same criticism? Or Germany, which is much more focused on credentials and professionalism than the U.S.

Japan is an occupied country (as is Germany) - asserting themselves strongly enough to institute healthy cultural norms would be an act of rebellion against the American priesthood who would destroy them. Their only goal right now is to survive long enough for American collapse.
