IMO, it was more the celibacy issue that was the problem. It's an unnatural situation that selected for closeted gay men & put them in an all-male in-group. Due to the desire to hide/deny the homosexual culture, these men preyed on subordinates who could be cowed into silence.

Agree on the long term that priestly celibacy is both a bad idea and against the plain words of St Paul who commanded that bishops must be married with well behaved children but the pre-Vatican II Church did much better than the progressive post VII Church b/c it excluded gays
