I'm sure that was part of it, but you will not find that attitude anywhere on the left today. This goes back to a development that people are only now slowly waking up to: There are very few "principle" or "policy" true believers left, and their power is dwindling.

The reason for this is diversity. In his autobiography, Lee Kwan Yew makes the observation that, in a diverse society, people don't vote based on policy, they vote based on their racial or religious group. Broken up a bit more, I think this describes well what we're seeing.
