A brief thread on my personal thoughts on the utility of "very soft" martial arts. I "am" a white belt (entry level novice) in traditional karate and judo, based on lessons I took back in college. At the time I was considering military enlistment.
I think your perspective is quite off regarding BJJ and judo. The techniques that are practiced in judo (mostly throws from standing / some work on submission from the ground) are inherently more risky and prone to causing injury than the techniques emphasized in bjj

...so much so that more than one person I train with in bjj does it because they've been forced to or have chosen to retire from judo.
