A 7-year-old child was hit in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting today in Albany. For weeks, we've been mapping all of the shootings and homicides in the city. This is the result:https://www.timesunion.com/projects/guides/albany-shooting-map-2020/ …

We need to shut down the flow of firearms to criminals. Only 10-15% of firearms recovered at crime scenes were stolen, so by requiring national licensing and registration we can shut down the secondary market that provides 85 - 90% of the firearms to criminals.

Are you saying the NY Safe Act needs to be nationwide. Laws are only obeyed by the law abiding. Criminals don't obey the law.

Responsible gun owners won't have a problem doing their part to shut down the 85-90% of guns that criminals get from the secondary market. It's easy. With national registration and licensing, we can identify WHO PROVIDED THE GUN TO THE CRIMINAL, and toss them in prison for 20yr

Sure the Safe Act is not controversial. You didnt answer the question. Handguns in NY are required to be registered. Handguns are outlawed in NYC. So how can anyone have a handgun that isn't legal without committing a crime?

Only 10-15% of guns used by criminals are stolen, so they drive to VT and buy one out of the trunk of someone's car. If they're in Chicago, drive to Indiana. Yes, that's illegal but without national licensing and registration, there's no way to track guns back to their source.

10% is a huge number. The goal should be to interdict illegal guns already in the community. But the police won't do that. And when the police back off gangs fill the vacuum and shootings go up. Whether the handgun is legal or not.

10% is a huge number, but 90% is 9x more. So, the low-hanging-fruit is shutting down the #1 channel for criminals to get firearms, the secondary, unregulated market. If you're not making money diverting firearms to criminals, what's not to like?

National registration won't accomplish the goal

There is no way to resolve the national issue of untracked secondary market sales without national licensing and registration.

You could have police stop and check likely criminals for gun possession. If only there was a catchy term for that ... "Halt and check"? Nah...
