The particular situation is one that's rife with confounding factors that are all crimethink to consider. Men's friendship is valuable - women's less so. Women therefore have an incentive to do what it takes to keep male friends.

Almost certainly the fact that men are reporting that his female friends find him attractive is due to women (consciously or not) sending enough signals of attraction to keep him around.

The typical male friend for a woman is a guy who is socially valuable but marginally not atractive. A lot of the value is maintained through the ambiguity of the relationship. It makes sense for women to ‘banish the thought’ consciously or unconsciously

The absurdity is in looking at conflicting reports and thinking the reports map to reality Men are "clearly misguided" because their report doesn't line up with the women's reports? Taking women's reports that she believes her male friends aren't attracted to her at face value?
