People really don't get the implications of evolution - even academics who supposedly study it. Women haven't had free sexual choice for millennia - their mate selection algorithms barely function b/c they're badly out of tune with evolutionary changes to humans.

Doesn't matter how it got started - modern women would have even less functional mating algorithms if it weren't for the fact that large portion of it is offloading judgment onto other women. Evaluating men is hard - let other women do it and free ride.

The only problem part is that male status hierarchies are new - evolved over a period of little female sexual choice - so women have very limited ability to perceive those hierarchies. They interpret them but are routinely very wrong.

Men can shape female desire though - she's programmed to accept a man who owns her if that ownership is given by the tribe and the high status men in it - that's basically the only selective filter women have been through in the last 10k years.
