The mismatch between elo-style balance (finding other players where you have a ~50% chance of victory) and what people generally like (winning 2x as often as they lose) is really striking.

what he's complaining about is not even elo matching though, but something that could be solved by it - if you're being matched with a guy that is consistently stomping you, something is wrong

but doesn't he have a point? games are not only competitive, but meta-cooperative too: fun social activities with an edge. more edge comes at the cost of the playerbase, so there's a balance for each particular game - he's complaining about more social games tilting towards edge

He has somewhat of a point but the complaint is better directed at the game design. "This one game in Fall Guys is set up so that the skilled players will win far too often" is an honest phrasing of his complaint.
