Ordinary technology depends on someone knowing how it works, whereas social technology often depends on no one knowing. ("Don't worry; the invisible man in the sky will enforce our contract.") Why? Shouldn't knowledge help?

If it helps people's understanding to imagine God as a man in the sky then yes - publicly undermining that conception degrades social technology by eroding its basis. God is the universe and the nature of the universe mandates the old social technologies that we've thrown away
