McCain graduated in the bottom 1% of his class. He crashed planes. Captured, he made propaganda broadcasts. In the Senate, he supported obviously stupid policies. Nobody's perfect.

Right... those are actual things. Causing 132 deaths on his ship (which is a constant talking point of many Trump supporters) is fake. But people are easily manipulated and gullible. They see it in a facebook post, they regurgitate it, now people are saying it everywhere as fact.

On the other hand, I know of an example or two in which the official report is a lie. Military commissions are usually pretty competent, but they will produce a cooked result if ordered to do so.

Right, there are examples where they have lied. But there is absolutely no reason to believe this is one of those instances. The only 'evidence' to support it is a random person saying it. Problem is that random person's slander got spread, now it bears weight in people's minds.

The fact that his father was the CINCPAC is a *huge* reason to believe this is one of those instances but obviously there's not going to be definitive proof. The rest of his track record of incompetence and narcissistic destruction is more "reason to believe".

A CINCPAC has a finite amount of influence: My judgment is that it probably would not extend to a shielding a screwup that ruined a fleet carrier and got a lot of people killed. Avoiding getting kicked out of Annapolis: more plausible.

There has been nothing pointing to McCain having anything to do with it tho? His father heading the fleet does not point to him having anything to do with it.

Obviously his father being CINCPAC doesn't point to him having caused the disaster; "there was an on-board disaster it must have been CINCPAC's screw-up son" - no. His father being CINCPAC is a reason to believe there could have been a cover up. GC judges it unlikely though.
