Yes, in the case of hard science I think there is a good defense here, as it has an empirically demonstrable trend to get closer to the truth with time. However, I don't think this same defense could easily be applied to other areas of belief.

You can tell a lot faster than that; people flock to good religions when they're available. The problem is that the religion's memetic immune system deteriorates over time as it accumulates antibodies to non-existent threats and pathogens evolve novel infiltration strategies.
