To be clear, I am not opposed to free speech, just bad arguments for it. With respect to this argument, one could hold that while those in power may be wrong, if they are less likely to be wrong than the masses then having their views enforced will lead to the better outcome...

... from the fact that I may be wrong about something, it simply does not follow that a "market place of ideas" will produce a better outcome.

I'd also note that skepticism about our ability to know if our views are correct may put us in a position where it is impossible to empirically defend the view that free speech leads to more good ideas winning since that would require us to first identify what the good ideas are.

Yes, in the case of hard science I think there is a good defense here, as it has an empirically demonstrable trend to get closer to the truth with time. However, I don't think this same defense could easily be applied to other areas of belief.

Not getting stuck is only good if the thing you're going to move onto is better than what you've got going now. For many cultural views, it seems plausible that it would have been better if we became "stuck" many decades ago.

Authoritarian systems can have, and have had, means of changing prescribed views. It's just that the views are changed by a central authority rather than the masses. And for many aspects of worldview it isn't self evident that we need a great deal of change and adaption.

Ultimately it's an empirical question; can a central authority set up to find truth better than what wins in a marketplace of ideas? The dysfunctions of the MoI are pretty evident - people group with beliefs that generate cohesion and max status and capture information orgs.

Hard to say what traps central authority might fall into since any examples have been in a defensive war for centuries.
