What if I told you those people are always in charge, and your choice is either to become them or be stepped on by them.

This was already a near universal belief for a generation, which promptly begat our new woke overlords. You've rationalized becoming a conservative.

Who even sold these people on "equality of opportunity" - what a bizarre and insane idea. Has anyone ever made a case for it that didn't have an assumption - hidden or not - that "the alternative is equality of outcome"?

Equality of opportunity is as impossible as equality of outcome, but it's the older position so it feels safer.

"I've got the solution! We'll go back to when we only had stage one cancer!" Equality of opportunity was a tool for destroying social arrangements and was discarded when it fulfilled its purpose and was used up - not some stable point or social ideal.

FWIW I agree that the "equality of opportunity" framing is not quite it. I suspect Sonya does too and this is just the curse of 280.

It's transparently insane outside the progressive frame. I'm a better father than you; I instill winning values in my son and pass on my better genes. Uh oh, better equalize opportunity! The only argument against that is hairsplitting about the definition of "opportunity"

Right, and this is why it's a poor framing. I am rich and planning to give my kids every advantage I've earned for them. I make no apology for that and reject a rallying cry that implies that. But there is something legit in what Sonya is gesturing toward.

There is nothing legitimate about "equality of opportunity"; it's an outdated memetic weapon that kept on reproducing even though the target was destroyed long ago.
