People voted for a Trump because breaking norms seemed a ticket for retaking power from the confusion and complexity of post-modern governance, but it really just made those extra-electoral institutions more vengeful, angry, popular, and powerful.

I don’t buy the SSC premise that anyone was unaware of the possibility of PC blowback. Problem is that the right is trapped: that’s one of the risks you take when you have no reason to trust Dems (or GOP establishment) not to do things like “elect a new people” if in power.
