Scott Alexander is by no means evil. But he absolutely did not understand what game he was playing. He wanted people to be reasonable and fair, because he himself tries to be reasonable and fair. This is like asking the lion not to eat you because you have never eaten him.

He wants his side (the left) to be reasonable and sane until they win enough to get really bloodthirsty. Part of them being "sane" is listening to this advice. In one of his now-deleted posts he considered the possibility that he was lying to himself about which tribe he was in. Maybe, he mused, he was not really red or blue but a third tribe, tribe grey. I consider it a serious error that he did not follow this line of reasoning more.
