Thinking about that all day: how miserable must it be to live with such a mismatch b/w your traits & your environment? How many sci fi stories have the premise that, however kind it make seem, it's cruel to lift people into a society they could not themselves have built?

It's even worse; we encourage them to commit crimes by not letting them get away with it dozens of times before they're even arrested then they get a few free arrests to learn that that doesn't matter either.

Once had a chat with this precinct captain who spent her whole career on the enriched side of town. Asked what the low clearance rate did to crime prevention she said “Deterrence? Oh honey, just say what you mean. Murder is legalized here and these kids know it.”

Yep; 13 do 50 is a lie because of the massive backlog of "unsolved" cases in cities. Even "unsolved" is an implicit lie - as if some kind of criminal genius like Moriarti foiled the investigators with the perfect crime
