The rebuttal is wrong. The different sectors of imperialist Western countries worked together much more in those days - the Church was much more intertwined with the State or was the State, and imperialist corporations were often set up and protected by Western troops.
My story fits the facts better; it's not that the progressive types were those who used to die in childhood - whole families converted because the socially destructive memeplex is personally advantageous in gaining status (but disastrous for leaving descendants).

Rich people tended to have more surviving children in the old days. Nowadays, richer people choose to have fewer children than poorer people.
