Bonfire of the Vanities was a great title because it described how far McCoy had to fall to burn away his pretensions. Bonfire of the Vanities someday will have to suit us and everyone who pats himself on the back for how great we are because we're so non-racist.

In Florence, during the Medici years, a reformer named Savanarolla led a crusade to purify the church, including literally burning 'vanities' art pieces, in a bonfire. Wolf gets his title from that event I think.

He makes it a metaphor and pays off the title at the climax of McCoy's character arc; here's McCoy describing how his pretensions have been burned:pic.twitter.com/lVeckfxRsg
