Populism elected Obama. Was it dangerous then?

What's your definition of populism? I've very rarely heard Obama use populist rhetoric.

That's because you are conditioned to not hear him as "populist" [populist=bad]. "You didn't build that" is a "populist" message of "hey, looting those people is ok because their property is illegitimate" Obama engaged in "populism" designed to stir up riots and it did.

The "you didn't build that" phrase was extraordinarily stupid. Populist doesn't equal bad. It is a political narrative that divides a country into the people and the elite. Did Obama use populist rhetoric from time to time? Sure. As often as Trump or Carlson? No.

He doesn't have to use it as often because *his* "populist" message gets amplified by every piece of entertainment, every bit of framing of news, every selection of what to report and what not to report by NYT, by what gets taught and what not at Harvard.

I think we are just using a different definition of populism. I'm using the one deployed by scholars such as Mudde. What's your definition of populism?
