Feel like you can draw an amazingly sharp cultural break between when troubled cops/criminals stopped seeing their priest (e.g. NYPD Blue) and when they started seeing a therapist (Sopranos, Departed)

It's funny, speaking of detectives, imagine the Continental Op going to a priest *or* a therapist. Therapists probably had to invent therapy to deal with men like the Continental Op

Meanwhile notice the breaks in culture between detectives Holmes (eccentric, flawed, but obvious hero) Continental Op (restored order, but through violence, questionable hero) Marlowe (everything has become corrupt, can only achieve small fraction of justice, doomed antihero)

Homes was in conflict with criminals and rival to a system that wanted to keep order but needed help. A modern detective striving for justice is in conflict with a system that wants to ignore crime because crime allows cities to be reliable vote banks by driving out badvoters.
