It's not really something Stalin would put in early writings because it's not something he planned in advance. Individually once he was at the top he saw that he could lose the support of his key stakeholders if anyone claimed to be more leftist than he so he cut that off.

He was trapped in a bad situation dictated by the logic of game theory and so he changed the rules to make himself the center so everyone would betray each other in his name (safe for him) vs in the name of the revolution (safe for no one)

Yep, still an unrestrained holiness competition but there's an end point - loyalty to Stalin. "Loyalty to the revolution" has no bounds and can always become more and more unhinged.
